CROSS YOUR EYES AND IT WILL BECOME CLEAR

There are few moments in life that I understand. I get the basics: food, water, shelter. I understand that we all need love, whether it be friends, family, or relationships. I have the basics, I have the family, I have the friends, and I've experienced great love. I get all that, but I still sit here confused and feeling like there's more.

Once I was reading a book that was discussing auras and how to see them. It said to sit outside at either dusk or dawn and to focus on the tops of the trees set against the sky as a background. After focusing for a bit, you were to slightly cross your eyes to change the focus and when done right, you will notice a faint light of white around the tops of the trees. After many attempts throughout the week each evening, I managed to see this. I was amazed at how altering your focus allowed you to see something that is always there, but we lose sight of.

I'm going through a rough patch in life lately. I'm confused, I feel stagnate, I feel ugly, I feel alone even when I'm surrounded by friends and laughter. Nothing in particular has set this off, I think it's just an accumulation of things. I don't want to dive into the depths of it all. It's going to get better, and I'm already better than where I was. But lately I'm seeing how life is like trying to see that aura around the trees. We struggle and struggle to see this thing, to find what we're looking for, but if we just slightly change our perspective we can see it. The myth becomes a reality.

I feel like my focus has slightly changed, but strange things are happening. Within days of me deciding on a moving date, I found that I am going to have to hold off for another few months at least. The last two weekends were spent in nature with dear friends. I laughed and relaxed, and sat there pondering if I really wanted to go. The bonds I have here with many of the people in my life are so intense that I wonder how I managed to be away from them for the three years I lived out of state. A sudden calm has taken over me at work, and I haven't been pissed all week, which is a miracle in and of itself. I shook a stranger's hand and had one of those POW moments where it's almost like your life flashing before you. It's as if you found something you'd lost, not necessarily that it be them, but maybe something they show you, or open your mind to. I knew in that moment that even if I never saw that person again, they would always be a brief and beautiful memory that I would never forget.

These things...I'm not sure how to describe it, but what we may see as normal day-to-day occurrences has suddenly taken on new meaning. I find myself looking around and taking more in. I'm trying to see past that tree line and see the aura. It feels like living in a story book and I'm anxious to see what happens on the next page.

Dear Friends,

I have learned a dear lesson today about yammering about bowel movements.

Moments ago I commented that I forgot our zip code. The following conversation happens while we are both in our own cubes, facing our computers.

Elizabeth: You are retarded.
Me: No, I am senile. Sometimes I'm retarded though.
Elizabeth: And you wonder why you're single?
Me: Actually, my brother says it's because I talk about poop too much. I think poop is funny.

I look up and there is an unknown man walking by my cube at that exact moment who heard me.

I have learned my lesson. Will it stop me? Nahhhhh.

I have finally snapped.

Buckle your seat belts, folks. I have truly gone off my rocker this time. You think I am kidding? Any of the four people who've heard this story will sit and nod in agreement...."Yes, Heather has officially lost her marbles."

Oh dear mother of God! I sit here shaking uncontrollably at the terror that I just encountered. I had not intended to write twice tonight, but I cannot believe what has just happened and I must share this with you all in case my heart gives out and anyone's wondering what caused it.

I am watching Last Comic Standing and doing Callanetics (no, not a typo). I'm all good, doing my thang....then it happens. I lift my legs into the air and I see it shooting towards my face. It's a fucking spider!

Now, I am not afraid of spiders typicll. I'll either ignore it, smash it, or knock it down so I can pretend I don't know it exists and wait for it to build it's web elsewhere. The one time they bother me is if they're on me. If they get on me, I will scream, flail and run like the dickens.

So here I am laying on the floor with my legs in the air, with a spider shooting at my face. It happens so quickly that I do not have time to move my head before it hits. I feel it land in my hair and I scream! I jump up faster than you can blink, and scream and shake my head. My ponytail holder flies to the floor, the barettes fly out of the sides of my head and land near the ponytail holder.

Still, the spider has not come out.

I jump around alternating the time of my feet in what can only be described as an impersonation of the "Maniac" dance in Flashdance. And without realizing why, I whip off my t-shirt. Thing is, I'm still doing my "Maniac" dance screaming and running my fingers wildly through my hair. Now my tits are flying braless with all of the other goings on.

Then I see it. It slowly drifts to the floor in what seems to be slow motion. And...

It's a ball of lint.

Okay, but that was one burly ball of lint since I felt it hit my head.

There I stood...topless, shaking, and with quite the insane hairdo.

"Huh," I said out loud. I then put my shirt back on, put my ponytail holder and barettes back in their rightful place and crawl back into this chair to write.

I really need a fucking vacation.

After 19 years of smoking (less a year and a half and a couple of months-long stints) I finally quit smoking on January 3rd this year. I got pneumonia, which helped me quit since I couldn't inhale if I tried. Then a four month misdiagnosis of emphysema helped secure the not smoking. By the time I got the word in May that it was actually just asthma (nice one, doc), I had luckily jumped the smoking hurdle and didn't want to go back...okay, minus one cigarette on my 6-month anniversary that I hadn't planned, but I felt like crap and was glad I'd quit.

Now here I sit over six months later smoke free, pink-skinned, fresh smelling, and 25 pounds heavier than I was in January. Yes my friend, 25 pounds! I have yet to discuss it on my blog, as I'm terribly depressed and ashamed of this. I work out quite often, typically go for a hike every weekend with my friend, and have quite the lung endurance now. Unfortunately, to deal with every situation I would typically turn to cigarettes for, I have turned to binging on candy. I don't keep junk at home, but one of my coworkers has three giant canisters of M&M's, Skittles, and more M&M's. I have begged and pleaded for them to remove these so I won't eat them, and every time they tell me I need to have some willpower. I have fucking addictive behaviors, what do you expect? I have done the standard turn from one addiction to the next. I love most of my coworkers, but I hate they are so evil about this one thing. EVIL! EVIL YOU!

My friends all say that they can't tell on me, but I don't expect them to agree with me. Also, I have been blessed with what I call "below the joint skinny". My calves, ankles, forearms, and wrists are small. My face is narrow, though not as much as it used to be. All the weight has gathered in secret places. Now after 25 pounds, and doubling in jeans size I have had it! I've seriously fucking had it. I hate myself for this and have to change this or I will seriously start smoking because though I may get cancer, at least I would be thinner.

I only had one binge today, which is good compared to my typical binges at work. I was feeling too gross for the gym, so decided to work out at home. I got home and changed and did Tae Bo. I had not done Tae Bo in quite some time and almost immediately remembered why. I am the most uncoordinated person EVER! I do okay at some of the moves, but you ask me to kick to the side and I suck. I couldn't knock over a toddler with my kick. In fact, the kid could probably touch my ankle and it would knock my unstable fat ass, right over. But I trudge on.

I'm Tae Bo-ing away, throwing punches that are okay when using the right arm, but the left arm is like whipping a spaghetti noodle out from my shoulder. I laugh every time I do so. Punch to the right (yah)! Punch to the left (wet noodle, haha)! It's an ugly, vicious cycle. I'm laughing and punching and watching my left forearm do it's seizure dance that is supped to be a punch. But I continue.

I get to some of the non-sidekick leg work and I'm loving it and coordinated and kicking ass! Then he says it...the one thing that I know I'm in deep shit over. It's always the same and I doubt it will ever change...the punching bag. What this is, is you simply pretend you are hitting a punching bag. The uvula-looking punching bag. Sounds easy enough, right? No. This is like swimming in shark-infested waters for me while on the rag. It's flat out dangerous!

I get into position and try to lean my head back as far as possible, as I know what's coming. I lift my arms up to the invisible uvula punching bag and start rotating my forearms over each other. Hey! I'm doing it! I can do this! SMACK! I clock myself in the chin. Fuck! Ouch! I keep spinning my forearms and turn my head to the right and back to avoid my air space even more. Spin, spin, CRACK! I have somehow punched the knuckles of my left and right hand together and it hurts! I keep going though and two seconds later I somehow hit my cheekbone. SHIT!

This totally sucks and I am cursing Billy Blanks for making me see how foolish I look when I'm trying really hard not to. I finish it up sweaty, bruised and with half a chin left. Actually, this could be a good thing. If I keep this up, I could lose weight and possibly end up with a new nose from clocking myself over and over!

That's what that "optimism" thing is...right?
